6 ways to protect your baby from "Chronic Rhinitis" in the rainy season

Common illnesses in children that are frequently encountered during the 'rainy season' often include the common cold. Rainwater tends to carry disease-causing germs, making children more susceptible to falling ill. The symptoms of a lingering cold can persist or worsen if not treated correctly, and it might lead to potentially dangerous complications.

Symptoms of a Chronic Rhinitis in children:
  • Runny nose
  • Mild fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Sneezing
  • Fatigue
  • Pale skin with sweating
  • Restlessness during sleep
  • Sore throat and productive cough
  • Earache

Types of Chronic Rhinitis:

  • Infection-related Chronic Rhinitis : Particularly those caused by bacterial infections, are more concerning compared to colds caused by viruses. Bacterial lingering colds can have a longer duration, more severe symptoms, and can potentially lead to complications.
  • Allergy-related Chronic Rhinitis : Often triggered by various allergens that individuals are allergic to and are exposed to regularly, such as dust, pets, pollen, and certain foods. It all depends on what someone is allergic to, and failing to avoid these triggers can result in allergy-related chronic rhinitis.

Basic remedies for early treatment of Chronic Rhinitis symptoms :

  • If there's a runny nose and watery discharge, over-the-counter cold medications like paracetamol can be used. However, it's important to consider the child's weight or consult a pharmacist before administering medication.
  • In cases of nasal congestion and difficulty breathing, nasal drops can help reduce swelling and clear the nasal passages. However, they should not be used for more than three days.
  • Regular nasal irrigation with saline solution can provide relief. Teaching the child how to properly do this themselves is beneficial.
  • Antibiotics for treating bacterial chronic rhinitis should only be used based on a doctor's recommendations.

  • Have an umbrella or raincoat on hand when taking the child outside.
  • Consume nutritious foods, emphasizing vegetables and fruits rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, guavas, grapes, and pineapples.

  • Ensure sufficient rest. During rainy periods, avoid sleeping close to windows to prevent exposure to rain droplets, and dress warmly.
  • Teach children to avoid close contact with individuals who have colds. Train them to cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing, or consider using masks.

If a child has a Chronic Rhinitis, parents should investigate the root cause beforehand. If a child frequently experiences chronic rhinitis, it's advisable for parents to consult a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
