Change your mind when your child is LGBTQ+
LGBTQ+ Diversity is a sensitive matter, especially during the time when children are discovering their own identities, which can vary in duration and show different expressions. The key factor that enables children to come out and be accepted with confidence is understanding from their families. Today, we have 5 ways to adjust your thinking when your child identifies as LGBTQ+.
- Increase communication: Use open-minded questions to create opportunities for the other person to speak and share their experiences. As parents, strive to be good listeners and make an effort to understand what your child is explaining.
- Seek knowledge: If you don't understand the choices your child has made, educate yourself by gathering information. However, if you feel uncomfortable or concerned about their gender identity, it is advisable to seek reliable counseling to gain a better understanding of your child.
- Acknowledge autonomy: Recognize that your child is an individual and not your possession. They have their own lives and the right to make choices for themselves, ranging from minor decisions like food and clothing preferences to more significant aspects such as education, career paths, or personal identities.
- Acceptance and support: Accept that your child's life belongs to them, while your concern belongs to you. Show your care, be there for them, provide support, and offer advice whenever needed.
- Stand by your child: Be supportive regardless of the changes that occur. Your child will always be your child. Therefore, it is your responsibility to care for them, protect them from harm, support them, love them unconditionally, and be there for them in every situation.
Gender and sexual diversity are delicate aspects influenced by individual experiences and societal factors. If parents fear that their child won't be accepted by society, they should be the first to embrace and support their child. The understanding and support from loved ones will provide emotional strength for the child to navigate external challenges.
