Heat Stroke: A Danger that Elderly Should Be Aware Of!
Heat Stroke, also known as sunstroke, is a common cause of death among the elderly, second only to ischemic heart disease. This is due to changes and deterioration of organs in their bodies, leading to a body temperature exceeding 40°C. This condition causes blood vessels to become brittle and lose their elasticity, increasing the risk of stroke. Here are the warning signs of heat stroke that the elderly should watch out for!
- Extremely high body temperature, above 40°C
- Dry and hot skin, increasing body heat with no sweating
- Low blood pressure
- Rapid heartbeat, palpitations, fast pulse
- Intense thirst
- Dizziness, headache, confusion, fainting
- Nausea, vomiting, fatigue
- Possible seizures, muscle spasms, and unconsciousness
Heat stroke is a critical condition where the body cannot adjust or control internal heat levels, causing a continuous rise in body temperature. This results in symptoms such as headache, dizziness, delirium, seizures, unconsciousness, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, and shock. If left untreated for more than two hours, it can severely impact the heart, brain, kidneys, and muscles. Delayed treatment can be life-threatening.
