Is "firecracker sound" harmful to the unborn baby?

Whenever it's time for the Loy Krathong festival, it comes with fireworks and loud firecrackers, which can make many pregnant mothers worry about whether the sound of fireworks and firecrackers is harmful to their unborn babies. If a pregnant mother is in a place with loud noises, it can have the following effects:

  • Startle the baby: Loud sounds may startle or strongly surprise the unborn baby.
  • Impact the baby's hearing: Excessively loud sounds can have an impact on hearing, whether for the mother or the baby in the womb. Safe sound levels should not exceed 80 decibels.
  • May cause abnormalities in the fetus: During the first trimester of pregnancy, it is advisable for the mother to stay away from loud noises for an extended period as it may lead to stress and increased blood pressure.
  • Stress the fetus: Loud noises can lead to an increase in cortisol hormones.
  • Risk of premature birth: Premature birth can be caused by various factors, one of which is prolonged exposure to excessively loud noises.
Normally, the baby in the womb is protected from loud noises by the mother's abdominal muscles, the placenta, and amniotic fluid. This often means that the baby may hear sounds from the outside world as muffled and softer than they actually are. However, it's still challenging to predict which specific sounds may be harmful to the baby's ears, so it's best for expectant mothers to exercise caution when it comes to loud noises.
