Stay Healthy While Enjoying Songkran Beware of Conjunctivitis and Sunburn
Songkran Festival is approaching! Many people are getting ready to enjoy the water festivities. But did you know? During this period, there are common illnesses to watch out for. Contaminated water may contain germs and bacteria, and the hot sun in Thailand can also increase the risk of illness. Today we’re sharing “2 Common Illnesses During Songkran” to help everyone stay safe while enjoying the festival.
If water splashes into the eyes, it may cause :
Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) from dirty water : Water used during Songkran may contain bacteria and viruses that can cause pink eye.
- Red, itchy, irritated eyes
- Watery eyes and white or yellow discharge
- Burning eyes or blurred vision
- Wear swimming goggles or sunglasses to reduce direct water contact
- Avoid rubbing your eyes if irritated
- Rinse your face with clean water immediately if exposed to dirty water
- See a doctor if symptoms are severe
Sunburn from prolonged sun exposure : Playing in the sun all day may cause sunburn, resulting in burning and peeling skin.
- Red, burning, and sensitive skin
- Flaky skin after heavy sun exposure
- In severe cases, nausea, dizziness, or fainting
- Apply sunscreen SPF 30+ 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours
- Wear long-sleeved shirts or wide-brimmed hats to block the sun
- Avoid strong sunlight between 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated
